Pedro Pinho

Pedro Pinho has lived in and studied cinema in Lisbon, Paris, Barcelona, Maputo and Mindelo. His three feature-length fiction films premiered at the two most important film festivals in the world: Cannes and Berlin.

O RISO E A FACA (2025), his second feature film, a co-production between Portugal, France, Brazil, and Romania, premiered in the Official Selection at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Best Actress Award (Cleo Diára) in the Un Certain Regard section. The film has already won six awards and continues its worldwide festival run. To date, it has had commercial releases in France, the United Kingdom, Portugal, Brazil, Spain, Germany, and Guinea-Bissau.

A FÁBRICA DE NADA (2017), his first feature-length fiction film, premiered at the Directors’ Fortnight at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won the FIPRESCI International Critics’ Prize, and has gone on to win more than 20 awards at festivals around the world. The film received commercial distribution in Portugal, France, Spain, Germany, Brazil, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, Italy, China, Belgium, the former Yugoslavia, and Argentina.

Both O RISO E A FACA and A FÁBRICA DE NADA appeared in the annual best-of lists of prestigious publications such as Cahiers du Cinéma, Les Inrocks, Film Comment, Le Monde, Libération, I-D, and Folha de São Paulo.

AS CIDADES E AS TROCAS (2014), a documentary co-directed with Luísa Homem, debuted in 2014 at FID Marseille, and was shown at the Art of The Real in the Lincoln Center, NY and at DocLisboa.

UM FIM DO MUNDO (2013), a medium-length fiction film, debuted at the Berlinale in the Generation section.

BAB SEBTA (2008), His first documentary, co-directed with Frederico Lobo, debuted at FID Marseille, where it won the Marseille Espérance Award. Bab Sebta also won prizes for Best Documentary Film at DocLisboa 2008 and at ForumDoc BH 2009.

An advocate for collective projects, Pedro Pinho, with five fellow filmmakers, founded Terratreme, where he has had the chance to collaborate with other directors such as Luisa Homem, Leonor Noivo, Tiago Hespanha, Susana Nobre, João Salaviza, Filipa Reis and Miller Guerra, Cláudia Varejão and Basil da Cunha.

In 2023, he founded A Casa do Comum, a project by Ler Devagar, in Bairro Alto. It is a multidisciplinary space featuring independent programming, focused on the major issues facing the city and the world, attuned to the concerns of artists and audiences, and a place for reflection, sharing, and action.
